A Commentary by Johnny Harkins
Luk 10:30 And answering, Jesus said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho (here we have a man that is a religious man and we know from reading scripture that jerusalem is the city of God and it means the city of peace jeru salem the city of peace now when we read this carefully ....he went down to jericho now when we read about the israelites in scripture they went up from egypt, from all indications we can surmise that this man was loosing his faith becase he went down, a falling away) and fell among robbers, ( we know that the theif comes to kill steal and distroy) who stripped him of his clothing ( in this i see that the man being on the road down from the city of God. he started to run with the wrong crowd, in his association with these people him being a man of faith and of God he did wear clothes of rightieousness but by his associations he soon lost them. it is well written that in 1corithians 15:33 be not decieved evil company corrupts good character. And we know also that a rightious man must choose his friends wisely) and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. ( in wounding him i see that his wounds are not so much external but internal, wounds of the heart as he thought they were his friends but they proved otherwise )
Luk 10:31 And by coincidence a certain priest came down that way and seeing him, he passed by on the opposite side. ( here we have a priest, a man of God who is suppose to embody all of the fruit of the Spirit. which we know the ingredience of, compassion gentleness and kindness of which he showed none. I see here a man deviod of the Spirit of God, being a priest he had leaves that the fig tree had for people to admire but no fruit for people to enjoy)
Luk 10:32 And in the same way a Levite, also being at the place, coming and seeing him, he passed on the opposite side. (here we have another religeous man who should by all his declarations, should embody and adhere to all the precepts of God. But he doesnt, so many of us profess to know God and it is written as in John that if we profess to know him then we should also walk as he walked. Remember what our Lord said:- Mat 7:22-23 Many will say to Me in that day, Lord! Lord! Did we not prophesy in Your name, and through Your name throw out demons, and through Your name do many wonderful works?
And then I will say to them I never knew you! Depart from Me, those working lawlessness.)
Luk 10:33 But a certain traveling Samaritan came upon him, and seeing him, he was filled with pity. ( Now were getting somewhere we have a man here who embodies at least the fruit of compassion, I can just see our Lord sitting in heaven on his throne, as his eyebrow goes up as he sees this man show compassion. And we know that what is written that our Lords eyes go too and fro throughout the earth seeking someone to show himself mighty before.)
Luk 10:34 And coming near, he bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine, and set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. ( Here we find a clear illistration of Isa 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord Jehovah is on Me; because Jehovah has anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to bind up the broken-hearted, Also and a clearer illistration of a man with the love of Christ in his heart in Mat 25:35-4o For I was hungry, and you gave me food; I was thirsty, and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger, and you took Me in; I was naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me Then the righteous shall answer Him, saying, Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You? Or thirsty, and gave You drink? When did we see You a stranger, and took You in? Or naked, and clothed You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and came to You? And the King shall answer and say to them, Truly I say to you, Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brothers, you have done it to Me. )
Luk 10:35 And going on the next day, he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, Take care of him. And whatever more you spend, when I come again I will repay you.(Here we have another clear illistration of what our lord has said, when i come again, i will repay you for all your kind deeds. And now Jesus asked him a question.)
Luk 10:36 Then which of these three, do you think, was neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?
Luk 10:37 And he said, The one doing the deed of mercy to him. And Jesus said to him, Go and do likewise. we have a clear commandment ..... Go and do likewise!
